Friday August 31

I am back from vacation now and a lot happened while I was gone.

U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales finally resigned after the scandal involving the firing of several U.S. Attorneys by President Bush. The only surprize here is that it took so long. President Bush had to be the only remaining supporter of Gonzales.

U.S. Solicitor General Paul Clement is now acting Attorney General. Clement is also on the short list of possible permanent nominees with former Deputy Attorney General George Terwilliger and former Solicitor General Ted Olson. Both parties are looking for someone that can be easily confirmed by the Senate. It is possible that a current or former Senator may be appointed to make this happen quickly.

Republican U.S. Senator Larry Craig from Idaho is caught up in his own ordeal after it was released that he plead guilty to a charge of disorderly conduct after an encounter with a police officer in a Minneapolis restroom. The Senator is facing heavy pressure to resign and has given up his Senate Committee positions.

Actor and Former Republican U.S. Senator from Tenneesee Fred Thompson will finally enter the Presidential race September 6th. He will immediately join the top tier of candidates.

Hillary Clinton and Rudy Giuliani continue to lead their respective races by double digits in the nationwide polls.

Tuesday August 14

Deputy White House Chief of Staff and Senior Political Advisor Karl Rove will resign at the end of the month. Rove helped Bush make many of his important political decisions and was the architect for both the 2000 and 2004 Presidential Elections. It appears Rove will move back to Texas where he wants to teach and write a book.

The Rove resignation signals the beginning of the end of the Bush Presidency. Many will start calling him a lame duck.

As expected Tommy Thompson dropped out of the Presidential race after his sixth place showing in the Ames straw poll.

It has been reported that Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney has a net worth of about $250 million. He is easily the richest of the Presidential candidates. To date he has invested about $9 million of his own money in his campaign.

The latest polls continue to show Hillary Clinton leading the race for the Democratic Presidential nomination by about 20 percent points. She also leads in Iowa, the first caucus and New Hampshire, the first primary.

Rudy Giuliani continues to lead on the Republican side by about 10 points. Mitt Romney leads the Republicans in both Iowa and New Hampshire.

Sunday August 12

Yesterday was the Ames Iowa GOP straw poll. Mitt Romney won as was widely expected. Romney garnered about 32% of the vote almost twice the votes of his nearest competitor. Mike Huckabee was second and Sam Brownback third. John McCain and Rudy Giuliani basically skipped the poll not wanting to spend the money necessary to win. Each person voting in the poll had to purchase a $35 ticket. The campaigns paid for the majority of the tickets for their voters. Tommy Thompson is likely to drop out of the race after a disappointing sixth place finish.

Thursday August 1

President Bush has blocked Karl Rove's testimony to Congress citing executive privilege. Karl Rove was called to testify on his role in the firing of U.S. Attorney's.

Barack Obama made a major policy speech Wednesday on his views on foreign policy. Obama created some buzz when he said that he would attack terrorists inside Pakistan if he had credible intelligence and Pakistan wouldn't give us permission. Several other Presidential candidates strongly disagreed with Obama's statements.

Possible Republican Presidential candidate Fred Thompson raised about $3.4 million in June.

Hillary Clinton and Rudy Giuliani continue to lead their respective primaries.
