Can Barack Obama Win?

Barack Obama announced over the weekend that he is officially running for president. Obama has done well to position himself as the alternative to Hillary Clinton and looks poised to have a real shot. I don't think he will win but I think he can.

Obama still has work to do to establish himself nationwide. He isn't nearly as well known as Hillary Clinton or John Edwards. Many Americans don't have an opinion of Obama yet because he is so unknown. This can be both an advantage and a disadvantage. People will begin to form opinions about Obama over the next few weeks and he needs them to be positive. Obama's strengths are his fresh face, charisma, youth, and enthusiasm. He has to use these as much as he can to counter to weaknesses.

Obama has an experience problem. Yes he is a U.S. Senator but this is his first term. He will have been a Senator for less than 4 years on Election Day 2008. I just don't think it's enough for Obama to win. I think Americans are going to want a more experienced leader to lead the country forward.

I think Obama will make an excellent Vice Presidential candidate in 2008 and put himself in position to win in the future. He still has a chance at winning the Presidency but his chance is pretty small. Look for Obama in 2012 if the Republicans win or possibly 2016 if a Democrat wins. He would only be 55 years old in 2016 and will have plenty of chances in the future.
